We don’t want a return to the past

The NSW Government has rushed changes through Parliament which will see even more Aboriginal children permanently removed from their family, community and culture.

Authorities already remove Aboriginal kids from their homes 10 times more than other children. We’ve seen what happened when we ripped Aboriginal children from their families and communities in the past. Now, we’re about to see it again. Aboriginal people have the solutions to fix a child protection system in crisis. We need your support to demonstrate this to the next NSW government.

Stop the NSW Government from removing another generation of Aboriginal children from their community and culture.  

Dear Premier Gladys Berejiklian,

The Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Amendment Bill 2018, recently passed by the Legislative Council, will increase the likelihood of forced adoption of Aboriginal children – even when there are better care options for those kids within community, with people they know and trust. It will permanently sever families before giving them the support they need to stay together.

There must be greater consultation and engagement with Aboriginal communities about amendments to the statutory child protection system, before this harmful new legislation is put into practice.

Urgent action is needed to:

1. Exclude Aboriginal children and young people from adoption through the statutory child protection system,
2. Strengthen safeguards to protect Aboriginal children, including greater compliance with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principles;
3. Strengthen provisions for Aboriginal self-determination and participation in the child protection system, so that we are empowered to have an impact over the system that affects our lives;
4. Establish Aboriginal monitoring and review mechanisms to oversee the operation of the system with respect to Aboriginal children and young people, their families and community, including their placement and treatment; and
5. Prioritise family preservation and restoration.
